The Triton Linen sheet set uses 100% French flax linen with a stone washed finish to make the sheets comfortable from the day they arrive. The fabric weight is 165 GSM, which is a comfortable middle ground that works well in all seasons. The fitted sheet pocket is 16 inches deep so it fits most modern mattresses. Sizes run from Full to Cal King, and a broad color range is available on their site. If you have never had linen sheets, you should expect them to be a little bit more crisp when you first use them (but they soften fast with use).

Fabric

For those of you who have already started researching, the fabric weight is 165 GSM. It has a plain weave and a visible linen slub. That weight gives it more body than some of the really light summer linens while avoiding a heavy blanket feel. It drapes cleanly and breathes well. The fitted sheet uses full elastic which helps the corners stay put. Stitching is neat and uncomplicated with simple seams. Thread count really isn't a thing with linen, which generally relies on the GSM metric instead. The finish is stone washed which relaxes the fibers, so the sheets are soft before they arrive at your front door and they soften even more over time. The stone wash finish also cuts down on early shrinking and reduces the amount of time it takes for them to be broken in.

Fit sizing / shrinkage

The fitted pocket depth is 16 inches, so they will fit most mattresses (including many with toppers). The dimensions track to standard US sizing, so as long as you know the size of your bed then the sheets will fit without any issues. Expect slight shrinkage the first time you wash these sheets (which is normal for honest linen). The pre-washing that Triton Linen does along with the stone wash finish keep them from shrinking too much. Plan on them shrinking about three to five percent in most cases. Use cool water and a gentle cycle to reduce shrinking. Dry on low or line dry (this adds the clean drape people buy linen for). If the sheets have shrunk a little in the dryer, the weave should relax when you put them back on the bed. If you crank the heat on the dryer they will definitely shrink.

Softness

Out of the bag the fabric feels dry and textured with a little nubby character, which is how you know that it is real linen. The yarns relax with movement and water. The sheets might be a little itchy if you don't wash them before you use them the first time, so we suggest that you run them through the laundry before their first use. You can make them even softer with an extra rinse cycle and a short low heat tumble. Skip fabric softener since it coats fibers, and it can reduce the breathability that made you choose linen in the first place. A splash of white vinegar in the rinse compartment of your washer can help clear residual lint. After a week the sheets will really hit their stride, and after a month they will feel like your favorite camp shirt.

Winter with linen?

Linen is a natural climate manager. The fibers are strong and slightly hollow, and the open weave moves air and wicks moisture away from the skin. In summer that keeps hot sleepers from overheating. In shoulder seasons it can reduce clamminess that can wake you in the middle of the night. Linen can work in winter, too. Pair the sheets with a medium duvet or a wool blanket and you will have a nice dry and stable pocket of warmth. The sheets do not trap humidity, so you feel warm without laying in your own sweat. The steady microclimate that these sheets create is why many people switch to linen and never go back. It is a true four-season fabric.

Care and durability

Think of linen as a natural performance textile. Wash weekly or as needed on gentle in cool water with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and skip liquid softener since it can gum up the yarns. Use dryer balls (or better yet line dry). Expect some lint for the first few cycles which is normal as loose fibers shed. If you need extra cleaning power use an oxygen booster on stains. Hot water and high heat will likely cause shrinkage, so reserve those for special cases.

Allergies and skin comfort

Many people find linen friendly to reactive skin. The fiber does not hold static and it breathes well, which is what helps the fabric stay dry. That keeps dust mites away because they love humidity (a drier bed is less inviting to them). The simple finish on stone washed linen also helps since there are fewer added treatments. OEKO TEX Standard 100 is another comfort factor since it screens for many unwanted substances in the final product. Be sure to wash them before the first use to clear any lint and mill dust. A fragrance free detergent is a safe pick for sensitive sleepers.
